Hillam Lights 2022

There was another successful season of festivities in Hillam for December 2022.  The Hillam Lights Committee did a superb job once again and we must extend our thanks to them for the mammoth effort they put in every year, made more difficult with the Tree situation but the PC appreciates all your work to make sure this event goes ahead.

You can look at some pictures on the Facebook page:

The event is always well documented on social media by the attendees!!

Queen's Platinum Jubilee Celebrations

Hillam will be celebrating with Monk Fryston and Burton Salmon to celebrate the historic Platinum Jubilee of our Queen.  As part of the celebrations we will join the nation as a Town Crier announces the occasion on Thursday 2nd June, a piper will play a specially written score at 9pm and a Jubilee Beacon will be lit in the Churchyard of St Wilfrid's.  It is Hillam PC's honour to be able to purchase the Jubilee Beacon and employa piper for this part of the celebration.

The occasion will be marked by a national extended bank holiday from Thursday 2nd June until Sunday 5th June.  Our local celebrations will continue on Friday with a Pageant starting at the Hillam Ring Tree and making its way to Chestnut Green for a picnic.  On saturday, the Hillam Cricket Pavillion will host the annual Proms event and on Sunday there will be a lunch gathering at the Community Centre.  Details will be confirmed in due course.  We look forward to celebrating with you!  (16/2/22)

On Friday 8th May the 75 VE Day Flag was raised for the weekend at the top of Mill Close and the Poppy display was out at The Square.  All the poppies on the display were made by Hillam residents for the Remembrance Sunday display.  Villagers decorated properties with bunting to brighten up the village.

There were some key events happening on Friday 8th that residents could take part in safely from home. There was television coverage from the BBC.

11am: 2 Minutes silence

3pm: The National Toast - “To those who gave so much, we thank you.”

Ring Tree Ribbon Rainbow

April 2020

In these times of Social Distancing, whilst our community and the rest of the country remain apart from each other in order to fight Covid-19 united, the Parish Council invited children of the village to decorate the Ring Tree bench with colourful ribbons whilst on their daily exercise allowance (observing social distancing advice of course).

The result is spectacular, and the PC would like to thank all those who have taken part so far.  It is a great symbol of hope.

Stay safe everyone.

Remembrance Sunday 11th Novemeber 2018: Hillam Tribute

The Parish Council wanted to mark the centenary of the end of WW1 in a special way.  It was agreed that a display of poppies would go up in The Square, adorning the Water Pump feature and central to the village.

The Parish Council would like to thank the Brownies, Cubs and The Pub is the Hub group who have all made and contributed poppies for the occasion along with a number of residents and councillors.

A small group of volunteers gathered this weekend to assemble the display.  Also featured is a hand written calligraphy list of the villagers who lost their lives in battle.  Poppies have also been attached to the Ring Tree bench.

Councillors will attend and lay a wreath at the Remembrance Service to be held at St. Wilfrid's Church on 11th November.

NEW Village Entrance Planters

Thanks to a very generous donation from The Pub is the Hub group, 3 of the existing planters at the entrances to Hillam Village have been revamped with new signs, plants and decorative features.

The planters have been a long time in the planning and production stages but were finally completed this weekend, 4/11/2018.

Thank yous must firstly go to The Pub is the Hub for their donation towards the completion of this particular project and their input in the design phase.  Mr Bissett, a local builder, voluntarily carried out the construction work on the planters, for which the Parish Council are very grateful.  The beautiful cast Yorkshire Roses were produced and donated by the Venables family in Hillam, and hand-painted by Mr Plows, also a resident. We hope you agreed they make a fabulous decorative addition to the signs.  Thank you to all involved.

VILLAGE CLEAN UP 2017

The clean team did an amazing job in less than an hour tackling weeds and making areas in the village look tidier.  Thanks all for your help and to everyone who helps us keep the village looking good. Zac the dog wasn't so handy with a sweeping brush but he kept us entertained!

The Hillam Time Capsule was buried at the Ring Tree on 1st May 2017 at 12pm.  Thank you very much to everyone who contributed something to go inside, there were lots of interesting things donated so hopefully it will be treasured by those who open it in the future.

Thank you also to those who attended on the day!

Hillam now has a working and accessible Defibrillator!  It is located in the BT kiosk next to the notice boards and water pump and is available for anyone in need.

Inside the kiosk is also a 999 emergency telephone for any emergency - they can also give you the code to unlock the defibrillator if you don't already have it.

The Parish Council has also set up a Village Emergency Telephone System - if you are tending to a patient in need of the defibrillator, call this number

01977 232 911

and the volunteer on the other end will bring the defibrillator to your location - this allows you to continue chest compressions which will get much needed oxygen around the patient's body.  Programme it in to your landline and your mobile phone memory - you never know if you might need it...
